What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a professional skin exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile surgical blade to gently lift dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the face. The result is a smoother surface so skincare absorbs better and makeup can sit more evenly — without needles, without a peel, and usually without visible downtime.
At Skin and Beyond Spa in Gold Coast, Chicago, this is a standalone signature treatment: a full 60-minute visit focused on blade exfoliation, including the jawline and neck so the face and neck look cleaner and more even. It is mechanical exfoliation, not microdermabrasion crystals and not a multi-step facial menu — though many clients pair smoother skin with a facial on another day.

Who it’s for — and when to book something else
Book dermaplaning if you want instant smoothness before an event, you are bothered by peach fuzz or a dull, flaky texture, or you want a no-downtime exfoliation that works for many skin types. Searchers often look for a dermaplaning facial in Chicago or skin exfoliation — this visit is that service, not a generic spa page.
Choose a full facial instead if you need extractions, a long massage, or a customized 90-minute correction plan. Start with facials in Chicago or the Advanced Customized Facial when the priority is pores, acne care, or layered modalities.
Consider microdermabrasion when you want crystal-based exfoliation rather than a blade — a different mechanical option on our signature menu. We will tell you in the room which fits your skin that day.
Pause or reschedule if you have an active cold sore, open wounds, or severely inflamed breakouts in the treatment area. Tell us about recent peels, lasers, or prescription retinoids so we can adjust timing.
What happens during the treatment
Typical flow for a 60-minute dermaplaning appointment.
- Cleanse and prep. Skin is cleansed and dried so the blade can glide safely.
- Blade exfoliation. Short, controlled passes remove dead cells and fine hair on the cheeks, forehead, jawline, and neck — the areas that frame the face in photos and daylight.
- Soothe and finish. Calming products and SPF guidance so you leave comfortable, not stripped.
The treatment is designed for smoother skin, better product penetration, and a cleaner look along the face and neck. It is not a substitute for medical treatment of scars or melasma, but many clients like how soft skin looks immediately after.
What to expect on your visit
Assessment
We review your skin that day — sensitivity, breakouts, recent actives, and your goal (event glow, texture, peach fuzz). If blade exfoliation is not appropriate, we say so before we start.
Treatment
Sixty minutes at the table. You will feel light scraping, not pain. There are no injections and no harsh peel burn. Jawline and neck are included so the result looks cohesive, not “only the center of the face.”
Aftercare
Most people leave with a smooth, bright look and no social downtime. For about 24 hours, treat skin gently: hydrate, use SPF, and skip aggressive scrubs or strong acids if your skin feels reactive. Makeup is usually fine the same day — many clients book before evening plans.
Before you come
Arrive with a clean face if you can. Avoid waxing or heavy manual scrubs in the few days before. If you use prescription retinoids or had a recent peel or laser, mention it when you book so we can space treatments safely.

FAQ
- How much does dermaplaning cost in Chicago?
- $135 for a 60-minute standalone Dermaplaning at Skin and Beyond Spa, Gold Coast. Flat price on our price menu — book the service listed as Dermaplaning, not the shorter add-on.
- Is dermaplaning the same as a facial?
- No. A facial is usually cleanse, exfoliate, mask, and massage with steps tailored to your skin. Dermaplaning is focused blade exfoliation and peach-fuzz removal in one dedicated visit.
- Dermaplaning vs microdermabrasion?
- Both exfoliate mechanically. Dermaplaning uses a blade and also removes fine facial hair. Microdermabrasion uses crystals and a different feel. We help you choose based on your skin and goal.
- Does hair grow back thicker?
- No — vellus hair grows back at the same soft texture. This is a common myth; our Truths & Myths of Dermaplaning post explains more for readers who want detail.
- Is there downtime?
- Usually none. Skin may look pink for a short time. Avoid sun and harsh actives for a day if you are sensitive.
- How often should I book?
- Many clients return every four to six weeks for maintenance, or once before an event. We will suggest a rhythm that fits your skin after your first visit.
- Where are you located?
- 21 W Elm St, 2nd floor, Gold Coast, Chicago, IL 60610. Call +1 312 404 7262 or book online.

Love, love, love Natallia! She is so kind and makes her appointments so enjoyable. She helped me glow for my wedding day and I'll be going back 🙂
She quickly identified what my skin needed and tailored the treatment on the spot. It never felt like a generic session.
I’ve had facials done all over the world and Natalia is one of the best! Very knowledgeable and precise. Skin was so calm, clean and glowing post facial.
