What is a Korean facial?

I’m Natallia, the aesthetician at Skin and Beyond Spa. A Korean facial here is not a trend add-on. It is a 90-minute K-Beauty ritual: hydration layered step by step until the skin looks plump, even, and comfortably bright — the “glass skin” effect people ask for.

What makes a Korean facial in Chicago different from a regular facial is not a device. A typical Western facial often follows cleanse, exfoliate, mask — and leans on extraction or one strong active. K-Beauty treats skin as a system. I layer 10 or more steps so each one prepares the next: double cleanse, hydrating toner, gentle exfoliation only when the skin needs it, massage, mask, serums, essence, moisturizer, eye care, and sun-protection guidance.

The philosophy is prevention and barrier health, not a quick “fix.” Western skincare often waits for a problem — acne, wrinkles, dullness — then corrects it. I build a fortress of hydration so the skin functions better, looks healthier, and holds up to Chicago weather. This is hands-on, one specialist, customized the day you sit down. It is not a Hydrafacial-style machine treatment.

Why it fits Chicago skin

Chicago skin lives between two climates. Dry winter air and indoor heat pull moisture out of the barrier. Humid summers, sweat, and city pollution can congest pores and leave the surface dull. Clients come in tight, dehydrated, sensitive, or blotchy — not because the skin “failed,” but because the season keeps shifting.

A Korean facial answers that cycle with barrier support first. Ceramides, multi-weight hyaluronic acid, fermented ingredients, and hydrating masks help the skin hold water instead of stripping it. Massage supports circulation and lymphatic drainage so the glow is from healthier function, not a harsh peel. Gold Coast, Magnificent Mile, River North, Streeterville, and Old Town clients book this as a seasonal reset: plump in winter, calm and even when summer humidity hits.

The 10+ step ritual

The sequence below is the professional ritual I use in the room — moved from our K-Beauty guide, not a new essay.

  1. Double cleanse. Oil-based cleanser first to dissolve makeup, SPF, and sebum that water cannot. Water-based cleanser second for sweat, dirt, and residue. When the skin is truly clean, everything that follows can absorb.
  2. Toning. A Korean toner is hydrating, not astringent. It rebalances pH after cleansing and primes the skin — like priming a canvas before paint.
  3. Exfoliation, when needed. Gentle enzyme or a mild chemical — enough to lift dull cells, never a harsh scrub. Some visits skip this. Your barrier decides.
  4. Extraction, only if congestion is there. After the skin is softened, I use sterile technique. No forced extractions on calm skin.
  5. Massage. Circulation, reduced puffiness, lymphatic support, and deeper product penetration. It should feel nurturing, not aggressive.
  6. Mask. Sheet, hydrogel, clay, or treatment mask matched to the day: occlusive hydration, calm, or a deeper cleanse.
  7. Serums and ampoules. Concentrated layers for hydration, brightness, or firmness — one concern at a time so nothing overwhelms the skin.
  8. Essence. Lighter than a serum, more than a toner. Locks previous layers and adds another dimension of moisture. This is the “more is more” K-Beauty step.
  9. Moisturizer. Seals hydration, protects the barrier, still lets the skin breathe. Texture follows your type and the season.
  10. Eye cream. The eye area gets its own lighter, hydrating treatment — prevention through moisture, not harsh wrinkle fighting.
  11. Protection. After a facial the skin is primed. SPF and simple aftercare keep the work from undoing itself the next day.

Who it’s for

Book this if you want glass-skin hydration, even tone, a calmer barrier, or a 90-minute reset with little downtime. It adapts for dry, combination, oily, or sensitive skin because I change products and skip aggressive steps when the barrier needs care.

Choose another facial if you have active inflamed breakouts — start with the Acne Under Control Facial ($255). If you are pregnant or postpartum, book the Mother-To-Be and New Mother Facial ($275) with pregnancy-safe products. First visit and a more “menu plus modality” session is often the Advanced Customized Facial ($295). Full list: facials in Gold Coast and prices.

Wait or tell me first if you have open wounds, infection, a known allergy (including shellfish if we would use snail mucin), or a recent peel, laser, or microneedling. Korean facials are generally gentle; they are not a substitute for medical dermatology.

What to expect on your visit

Assessment

The treatment begins with a consultation. I look at your skin that day, ask about goals, routine, and sensitivities, then choose the steps — not a fixed template.

Treatment

Ninety unhurried minutes. You may feel gentle massage pressure, coolness from masks, a slight tingle from a serum. Discomfort is not the goal. You should leave refreshed, not red and irritated.

Aftercare

Skin often looks plumped and glowy right away. Skip retinoids and strong acids for 24 hours. Keep home care simple. I will not push a product basket — only what supports the result.

FAQ

Korean vs regular facial — what’s the difference?
Korean facials focus on hydration, prevention, and multi-step layering. A regular facial often emphasizes extraction and exfoliation. Mine is typically gentler and more complete: 10+ steps built around the barrier, not one device or one peel.
How much is a Korean facial in Chicago?
$325 for 90 minutes at Skin and Beyond Spa, Gold Coast. Flat price — no surprise upcharge at checkout. See the price menu for other facials.
How often should I book?
Most clients maintain every 4–6 weeks. If we are resetting dehydrated or stressed skin, I may suggest a short course of 4–6 visits, then monthly care. Frequency follows your skin, lifestyle, and budget — I will say so honestly.
Is there downtime?
Minimal. Immediate glow and hydration often last a few days. Slight redness can appear and usually settles within an hour. Avoid heavy makeup and harsh actives the same day if the skin feels sensitive.
Is it good for dry, sensitive, or winter skin?
Yes. Barrier repair and hydration are why Chicago clients book this in winter. For rosacea, eczema, or very reactive skin, we modify the protocol — fewer actives, more calm.
Do you always do extractions?
Only if the skin needs them, after it has been properly softened. Never forced.
